Being over 40 years old, we are among the oldest companies in
Singapore. We serve every member of the community from individuals
and businesses to even tourists to Singapore. The majority of our
revenue is secured from small and medium size enterprises (“SME”),
which reportedly employ more than 60 per cent of the workforce. As
such, we are clearly a community-based business.
For us, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important activity which reflects our core values and that of the customers we
serve. It is of strategic importance that we develop our CSR programmes to build a bond among our staff and with the community, as
well as to establish our presence in the community. We will embark on a broad base approach to reflect our wide reach for the next
three years and subsequently focus on a few key initiatives.
The two main areas we will invest our efforts are:
- Building of community spirit through the encouragement of volunteerism and giving
- Assisting the vulnerable in our community, especially needy children (reflecting our need to continually invest like a young company)
and the elderly (reflecting our appreciation of our heritage and treasuring our past strengths)
We will achieve these through the following initiatives :
1. BUILDING THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT
| We will engage the community through sponsoring events and
distributing our phone directories through community clubs.
As the key sponsor for Run Singapore, a fund-raising event that
is part of the President’s Challenge umbrella of charity activities
scheduled on 6 September 2009, we aim to help raise funds
for 10 adopted charities. Run Singapore is organised by SG
Cares, a new initiative of the National Volunteer and Philanthropy
Centre, to promote volunteerism to all Singaporeans and
residents in Singapore.
We will also use the decentralised distribution of phone
directories at community clubs to encourage community
participation in recycling projects. Subscribers will be asked
to return their obselete phone directories during the new
directories collection exercise. This forms part of Global Yellow Pages Limited’s
continuous support for environment-friendly programmes. |
2. ASSISTING THE YOUNG & ELDERLY AT RISK
| We will avail fund-raising appeal platforms during the distribution
exercise of the phone directories to selected charities targeted
to assist the young & elderly at risk.
Our internet infrastructure and design capability will also be
offered to support these selected agencies to raise funds.
As a company, we will encourage staff to design and organise
internal fund-raising activities for this target sector as well. |
CSR is a strategic value and must be done on a planned and deliberate form and not by accidental chance. The investment in these
programmes will entrench us in the community, build bonding among the staff and the community, while at the same time help many
thousands in the community from which we have benefitted. It is a necessary activity to not only ‘give back’ but also to establish and
grow our business.
We encourage staff, shareholders and business partners to join us in contributing in this area. |
